Museum Store - at the Children’s Museum at Museum Wharf

The Children’s Museum was being relocated to downtown Boston from its long-time location at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline.  It had purchased a vast warehouse on the Fort Point Channel that they were to co-occupy with the Computer Museum, hence the name Museum Wharf.  I designed a number of smaller projects while the huge reconstruction was underway, notably this handsome museum shop, which was so successful that it kept the larger museum solvent during its initial difficult years.  The Computer Museum was not so fortunate and no longer exists at this location - perhaps they should have hired me to design their shop as well?

The design of the shop was a metaphor of a North End Italian grocery store - with reading nook? - in that the shop would be very generous and with all merchandise on display rather than stored some place in the back.  After the success of this design I decided to open my own Italian food shop - Pasta Pronto - but on Beacon Hill, instead of the North End.

Constructed by Walsh Brothers who also worked with me on the projects at McLean Hospital.
